The Binga is one of the basket weaving communities.  Home to the Tonga people. They learnt how to weave these intricate patterned baskets from skills that have been passed down through the generations. It can take about 3 days to make a 16 inch round basket with the distinctive herringbone pattern.

The largest sized bowls are still used in the traditional way to carry maize (corn) from the fields.   It can take about 3 days to make a 16 inch round basket with the distinctive herringbone pattern.

The materials are all locally harvested such as wild grasses, small vines and palm leaves dyed with tree bark.  Making these baskets allows the women to help feed their families and sometimes to send their children to school.

African Creative works with one of their design partners, Plexades, and her son Tawanda. Purchasing these baskets allow her to have income and help provide for her family.
